The T3sk3y Defenestrator

Amazing WTC photos

This was posted back around 9/11 and I never quite got around to posting it. It’s a striking set of photographs by a journalist that died at ground zero when the second tower fell on him. His camera was found – and though it was a total loss, the memory card was salvaged and these unbelievable images were found.

Go go go, Crazy J!

One of the local pinball boys is upping the ante pretty significantly in Cokato, MN. Jason “Crazy J” Rufer broke ground today on a new 40×80 outbuilding – which he is calling the Minnesota Pinball Hall of Fame. Jason currently has over 40 pins and has pretty much run out of room indoors. Jason already has the most enviable collections around – and this should only help him add to it.

Go get ‘em Jason – we’re looking forward to the Grand Opening!

Because it scares you!

Ahh.. once again the Ig Nobel prizes have been announced. These are serious research projects that have been published in legitimate journals – but are all on topics that are a bit more niche.

The winners for this year were:

  • Peace:The invention of a device that emits a noise inaudible to adults but annoying to teenagers
  • Maths: How many photos must be taken to almost ensure no-one in a group shot has their eyes closed, by Nic Svenson and Piers Barnes
  • Ornithology:Why woodpeckers do not get headaches, by Ivan Schwab and the late Philip RA May
  • Nutrition: Why dung beetles are fussy eaters, by Wasmia al-Houty and Faten al-Mussalam
  • Acoustics: Why the sound of fingernails scraping on blackboards is so annoying, by D Lynn Halpern, Randolph Blake and James Hillenbrand
  • Medicine: The Termination of Intractable Hiccups with Digital Rectal Massage, by Francis Fesmire, Majed Odeh, Harry Bassan and Arie Oliven.

Eh, okay. The medicine award scares me – and I’m sure that’s why it works. Scaring somebody cures the hiccups – having that finger would scare me. Therefore.. hiccups gone. Truthfully, I think it’s an excuse by somebody that got caught where the ‘sun don’t shine’ – I can hear it now…

No really honey.. I had the hiccups!!

Research that makes you laugh, then think

I’m up to 4, I think..

As a man, this kind of cracks me up. Warning – probably not funny for the ‘non-cavemen’ out there. :)

10 Things Every Man Should Do Before He Dies

Why didn’t I drive?!?

I had one of the more frustrating travel experiences last night..

What should have been a very routine 5:02 – 6:30 flight from Minneapolis to Chicago finally ended at 2:45 AM today. The main culprit was really bad weather in Chicagoland – high winds, multi-inch rains, hail, etc. It hit at about 5 and really didn’t let up until about 11:30 PM.

My original 5:02 flight was cancelled when I got to the airport at 4 – so I rebooked for 10:05 figuring that I’d have time to run home and spend a few hours with the family before heading out. Besides some quality time with Heather and Will, I actually got a nice bike ride in and sucked down a pizza before heading off to the airport.

The 10:05 flight boarded on-time – but we were informed that we’d be waiting until 10:30 because of a ground hold at O’Hare. On top of that, we were joined by the people on the 6:30 flight who waited for an hour, flew to Chicago, circled for an hour, then returned. I’m really glad I wasn’t on that flight!

At 10:30, they extended it for another hour until 11:30. At that point, they finally started serving snacks and drinks as the crowd got surly and some started to disembark. By 11:15, the attendants came on the loudspeakers and said:

We’re bored – and we’re sure you are too. Therefore – we’re going to have a contest for a bottle of wine. Take out your boarding pass and write down your estimated wheels-up time.

Sweet. I’m watching the radar on my phone – so I’m guessing they’ll lift the ground hold at 11:30. Since I’m sure there were several flights waiting – I figured we’d have to wait for a while before taking off. Um.. 12:21 sounds perfect!

We ended up lifting off at 12:13 – so I didn’t win but I was pretty happy with my guessing. The flight went fairly uneventfully and we landed at about 1:20 AM. Remember – I was SUPPOSED to get in at 6:30!

The second batch of chaos hit when we got on the ground. When you shut down the world’s largest airport – chaos ensues. We waited to get to our gate. I waited 45 minutes to get our luggage. I waited 30 minutes to get a taxi (and I was one of the lucky ones!). And… I waited as a businessman tried three credit cards trying to check in at the hotel.

By the time it was all done – I was in bed at 2:45 AM. It made the 6:30 wakeup call for the 7:00 conference VERY painful!

Wish me luck for the return flight..
