Logins suck

Kermit has this way of constantly sending me news pieces from NYTimes.com. I’m sure they are interesting, but they require me to login just to read the dumb thing. The same goes for the local newspaper (StarTribune.com) and other websites.

I end up not using the sites because I don’t want to create a login just to read about some Bernese Mountain Dog group meeting.

Along comes BugMeNot – a website that posts generic logins for over 50,000 websites. Just enter the URL, and it spits a password back. That’s good stuff. You get access to the content AND you don’t get spammed.

Music Search Engine

I’ve never been able to work without music on – I just need to keep my ears busy. I also get really burned out on the same music quickly – so I always have to search for new stuff. Erik Anderson found this gem to suggest and visualize similar bands – check it out! BTW: It also works for movies…

Bless the Scots

The Scottish apparently didn’t like where they were in the 15th century. This caused them to have a deep seeded longing to go elsewhere. Now, Scotland is a small country – and there aren’t many places to go. This caused them to need to chase something in order to go anywhere.

Their sports reflected this desire – their two contributions to sporting life both involve chasing an inanimate object that is being aimed at a target. These sports are:

  • Golf
  • Curling
  • Logic had a company outing at the St. Paul Curling Club over lunch today. It was my second time curling – but the three years between outings didn’t help my skills.

Curling – for those not in the know – It’s a really bizarre activity that involves throwing a 45 pound stone down a pebbly ice rink to try to slide it onto a bullseye. All this time, sweepers are trying to make it go farther – or two far. Think bowling combined with shuffleboard combined with bocce ball combined with hockey. That’s curling.

I love the fact they store the beer right on the rink.

Here are pictures (courtesy of Erik Anderson) of our day. There’s a great mug of me in the third picture on the first page!

    Back in one piece!

I made it back from ESC 2005 in one piece – but not especially well rested. The show was a good success with many new leads and partnership opportunities. Here are a few pictures of Logic’s 20×20 booth at the show:

Here are my cheers and jeers for the trip:

    Cheers

  • Dell Support – my screen went dead on my laptop on the flight out. Dell support showed up at the Moscone Center and fixed it in 5 minutes
  • Ruth’s Chris Steak House – I never liked it before, but I had a ribeye (courtesy of Sharp Microelectronics) that was a .98M on the Manny’s scale
  • ThreadX – As Kermit put it, they were the “Girls Gone Wild” of ESC 2005
  • Betelnut Restaurant – Plates and plates and plates of fantastic dim sum fusion appetizers – courtesy of TI
  • Frontier Air – More legroom, Doritos and LCD screens. Take that, NWA!
  • Non-smoking laws – We all know California is pretty jacked up, but they nailed it with their non-smoking law. It’s so great to go out for a night – and not stink of smoke.
  • Jeers

  • WindRiver’s Booth – Uh, I just don’t get either their strategy or their Che Guevara art school marketing schtick.
  • Outsourcing to India – (them) “What’s your India strategy”? (me) – “Taking all your business away”
  • Sleep – Ah, I wish I didn’t need it.
  • Off to San Francisco

I’m taking off in a few minutes for a week in San Francisco at the Embedded Systems Conference. I get to spend the week standing in Logic’s booth and schmoozing with customers. I’ll throw an update on here mid-week if I get a chance..

I’ll be back Thursday night – I’ll check e-mail and be on my cell phone if anybody needs me..

    Pictures from the Kabuki

Thanks to everyone that came out to the Kabuki to help me celebrate my birthday on Saturday night. We ended up with 14 people (including Heather and I). Thanks also to everyone that came out to our place afterwards.

The Tufvanders still get the hardcore award for staying until 11AM the next day! (Yes Jacqie, you stayed until Sunday night – but you’re family. That doesn’t count).

Here are my pictures from the night:

    Birthday Party Photos

    Thanks everyone!

Thanks to everyone in my family for a great birthday celebration on Wednesday night. We started at “It’s Greek to Me” in Uptown for some great greek food, then went to Stan & Fran’s for birthday cake (carrot cake) and gifts.

It was a wonderful birthday – thanks again!

    Go Snoop, Go!

Somebody did a parody of Google.com, using nothing but “Snoop” speak – in otherwords adding ‘izz” to everything. It’s a scream – if you think that sort of thing is funny.

    It’s at: Gizoogle

See this blog in action, Snoop-style:

    Well-behaved Intruders

Yesterday, a pair of intruders broke into the T3sk3y headquarters during the work day and spent several hours inside the house. Lots of evidence was left behind, including:

    • lights left on
    • a pillow on the couch – showing one of the intruders needed a nap
    • several items moved around to new locations
    • a security camera picture of one of the intruders in action:
      Security Camera Picture

    And.. most importantly..

    • a beautiful trim and repair job completing our dining room paint job
    • cleaning and reorganizing our dining room

From Heather and I – a sincere thank you to the intruders for everything in the dining room – feel free to break in any time!

    I HATE Apple

I have about the same opinion of people that buy into the “Apple” lifestyle as I do about Green Bay Packer fans – way way way too much kool-aid.

    Having said that…

My lovely wife gave me a new toy for my birthday that’s about the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while. And, (you guessed it) it’s made by Apple. I got a brand new 1 GB iPod Shuffle last night and I have to admit that they did a pretty good job on it. The funny part is that many people in the “Cult of Apple” hate it – or just don’t get it.

For $149, you get a really tiny, pretty much indestructable lozenge that holds 18 hours of music – or a complete DivX movie and a few hours of music. Yes, I know it doesn’t have a display – but I really don’t need it. 99% of the time I have my music on shuffle play anyway. I sort of like the musical Russian Roulette of not knowing what is coming next. I also like the iTunes “AutoFill” feature that lets you load up 240 (or so) random songs to the iPod Shuffle. It gives you a brand new mix with zero effort.

Having tried to do exactly that with MusicMatch Jukebox and other players – it’s a ton easier.

Any good review has some room for improvement, this one included. I’m not sure what engineer at Apple thought that making a slider button completely slick would be a good idea. To make matters better, it’s the power slider. I’m anticipating that it’ll break in and slide easier with use. I also don’t get their LED indicator scheme – but whatever. I just need to hit play and let the good tunes roll…
